WestJet announced on July 20, 2026, that it will launch weekly nonstop service between Calgary International Airport (YYC) and Manuel Crescencio Rejon International Airport in Merida, Mexico (MID), beginning December 17, 2026.
The route is WestJet's first-ever connection to Merida and will be the only nonstop service linking Western Canada with the capital of Mexico's Yucatan state, according to Travelweek. ASUR, the Mexican airport operator that manages Merida's airport, welcomed the new service.
"These additions support the growing demand for options in Mexico and the Latin Caribbean, while sustainably expanding our schedule and managing our fleet during the peak winter travel season," said John Weatherill, WestJet's Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, according to PAX News.
Merida is the cultural capital of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, known for its colonial architecture, culinary scene, and access to archaeological sites including Chichen Itza and Uxmal. The Merida route is the headline addition among five new winter routes WestJet announced simultaneously, which also include new service to Punta Cana, Belize City, San Jose del Cabo, and Liberia, Costa Rica.
During peak winter operations, WestJet will serve 50 sun destinations from 15 Canadian cities, more than any other carrier in Canada, according to AirlineGeeks.
