Delta Air Lines announced on June 27, 2026, that it will launch twice-daily nonstop service between Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) beginning April 12, 2027. The route will be operated with Airbus A321neo narrowbody aircraft, providing more than 640 seats per day in each direction.

The move is a direct competitive challenge to United Airlines, which has long dominated Newark as its primary East Coast hub and operates approximately 300 EWR–LAX flights per month with lie-flat Polaris business class. Delta already runs up to 11 daily flights on the JFK–LAX corridor and frames the Newark addition as extending coverage to New York metropolitan area travellers who prefer New Jersey access. Delta Vice President for Los Angeles Scott Santoro cited the airline's modernized Terminal 3 at LAX, its Sky Club lounges, and its Delta One Lounge as competitive differentiators for premium travellers.

The timing is strategic: JetBlue has announced it will exit Newark as part of a network restructuring, with its EWR–LAX service ceasing October 14, 2026—six months before Delta's entry. According to Simple Flying, Delta's two daily flights will also compete with Alaska Airlines, which operates the corridor at varying frequencies. Business Travel News confirmed the announcement was made on a Friday (June 27).

Delta's LA expansion is part of broader investment ahead of the city's hosting of the 2028 Summer Olympics, which includes a second Delta One Lounge at LAX currently in development.
