Delta Air Lines will operate its first-ever nonstop service between Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) and Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH) beginning June 8, 2027. The seasonal route runs three times weekly through October 28, 2027, using an Airbus A330-200 configured with Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort and Main Cabin seating.
The Detroit-Athens route is the first scheduled nonstop service between the two cities by any carrier, according to Simple Flying. Athens becomes Delta's 12th unique long-haul destination from Detroit during the peak summer season and its seventh European destination from the hub. The route also gives Delta a fourth U.S. gateway to Athens alongside existing service from New York JFK and other American hubs. With more than 40 domestic connections available through DTW, the route creates a broad one-stop network for U.S. travellers heading to Greece, as described in Delta's official announcement.
Wayne County Airport Authority CEO Chad Newton said the launch gives Southeast Michigan travellers nonstop access to one of the world's most iconic destinations for the first time. The Detroit-Athens service joins two other new Delta European routes for 2027: Boston-Venice, starting May 7, and Austin-Paris, beginning March 27, all part of the carrier's broader summer expansion, according to The Points Guy.
