WestJet Launches Toronto–Ponta Delgada, a Three-Airline Azores Race
WestJet launched Toronto–Ponta Delgada on June 12, creating a rare three-airline battle on a single transatlantic route after Air Canada debuted the same pairing just one day earlier.
WestJet's inaugural flight on the Toronto Pearson (YYZ)–Ponta Delgada (PDL) route operated on June 12, 2026, operated by Boeing 737 MAX 8. Service begins at three weekly frequencies before rising to four per week during peak summer demand. The seasonal schedule runs through late September 2026.
The launch makes WestJet the third carrier on the YYZ–PDL market within a single week: Air Canada inaugurated the same pairing on June 11, while Azores Airlines has long been the incumbent. The simultaneous competition from two Canadian carriers is unusual for a market of PDL's size; analysts at Simple Flying described it as "a rare three-airline battle on a relatively small transatlantic route."
For WestJet, this is the first-ever scheduled service to the Azores archipelago. The 737 MAX 8's extended range makes the approximately 4,500 km crossing viable without a technical stop. Aviation Week's June 2026 new-route round-up confirmed "WestJet is also expanding its Atlantic network, launching 4X-weekly Toronto–Ponta Delgada service to the Azores using 737-8 aircraft."
The Azores, and São Miguel Island in particular, has seen growing demand from the North American diaspora and leisure travelers drawn to its volcanic lakes, hot springs, and whale-watching. WestJet's entry is part of a broader push to expand its European and transatlantic footprint using narrowbody aircraft.
