Air Canada has inaugurated three-weekly nonstop flights from Toronto Pearson to Ponta Delgada, becoming the second carrier to enter the Canada–Azores market within two days.
Air Canada inaugurated nonstop service between Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Ponta Delgada Airport (PDL) in the Azores on June 11, 2026, making it Canada's flag carrier's third destination in Portugal alongside Lisbon and Porto. The route operates three times weekly using the Boeing 737 MAX 8 in a Premium and Economy configuration, with the seasonal service running through September 5, 2026.
The launch gives Air Canada a foothold in an archipelago market that has historically been dominated by Azores Airlines. Air Canada's official November 2025 press release confirmed the route as part of a broader transatlantic push, offering up to 155,000 weekly seats across the Atlantic, Pacific, and South America in Summer 2026.
Ponta Delgada sits on São Miguel, the largest of the nine Azores islands, and serves as the main gateway for visitors drawn to the volcanic lakes at Sete Cidades, whale-watching excursions, and geothermal hot springs at Furnas Valley. The route at 4,524 km is one of Air Canada's shorter transatlantic narrowbody corridors in 2026, falling into the same bracket as its Halifax–Brussels service.
Notably, WestJet opened the same Toronto–Ponta Delgada market the following day, June 12, creating a rare scenario where two Canadian carriers simultaneously entered the same thin transatlantic route, alongside Azores Airlines. According to Simple Flying, this three-airline battleground makes Ponta Delgada one of the most competitive new routes in the 2026 summer season relative to its traffic volumes.
