Air New Zealand will relaunch nonstop service between Christchurch Airport (CHC) and Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) on October 28, 2026, as part of a major South Island expansion announced on May 20, 2026. The service operates three times weekly using Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.
The resumption was made possible by the return of Air New Zealand's 787 fleet to service following a prolonged grounding linked to global Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engine maintenance, combined with new 787s entering the fleet, per the airline's newsroom.
Christchurch–Singapore operates alongside Star Alliance partner Singapore Airlines' existing Changi–Christchurch service, significantly increasing total seat capacity between the South Island and Southeast Asia.
The Singapore launch is the first of three new long-haul routes from Christchurch announced simultaneously. Christchurch–Tokyo Narita follows on November 28, and Christchurch–Perth on November 30, all using the 787-9 at three-times-weekly frequency.
Air New Zealand CEO Nikhil Ravishankar described the expansion as designed to "reconnect Christchurch directly to major global hubs in Asia" and reshape how visitors travel to the South Island, according to Pacific Destinations New Zealand, which covered the TRENZ 2026 announcement in Auckland.
The routes position Christchurch as a second major international gateway to New Zealand, reducing dependence on connections through Auckland for inbound South Island visitors.
