The Phu Quoc–KL route is Sun PhuQuoc's fourth international service, joining existing routes from the Pearl Island to Singapore, Bangkok, and Hong Kong. Vietnam News reported that Kuala Lumpur was chosen for its role as a major Southeast Asian aviation hub, offering onward connections to more than 100 destinations across the region and beyond.

Founded in 2025 by Vietnam's Sun Group, Sun PhuQuoc Airways commenced commercial operations in November 2025 and has grown to 13 aircraft as of mid-2026, with fleet expansion to 32 aircraft planned by year-end. The airline operates a hub-and-spoke strategy with Phu Quoc at its core, positioning the island as an entry point to Vietnam's luxury hospitality and resort offerings for international visitors. Kuala Lumpur adds the growing Malaysian inbound tourism market to the carrier's international network.
