Vietjet Air will launch four-times-weekly nonstop service between Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat International Airport (SGN) and Colombo's Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) from August 2026. The announcement was made on 11–12 May 2026 during the Vietnam–Sri Lanka Trade, Investment and Tourism Cooperation Forum in Colombo, held as part of Vietnamese President To Lam's state visit to Sri Lanka and witnessed by senior officials from both governments.
The service marks Vietjet's debut in the Sri Lankan market and, together with a separate October 2026 announcement by Vietnam Airlines on the same route, creates the first direct air corridor between the two countries. According to Vietnam Airlines data cited at the forum, more than 38,000 passengers traveled between Vietnam and Sri Lanka in 2025, up 17.5% year-on-year — demand that has historically been served only through connections via third-country hubs.
Vietjet says the route is designed to stimulate tourism, trade, investment, and cultural exchange, while offering passengers from Colombo onward connectivity across the carrier's Asia-Pacific network, including destinations in Australia, Japan, South Korea, China, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.
Vietjet First Vice Chairman Dinh Viet Phuong said the route 'opens a new air connection between Vietnam and Sri Lanka, creating new opportunities for cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, and cultural exchange across South Asia, Southeast Asia, and the broader Asia-Pacific region,' per the official Vietjet press release. Aviation Week and Travel Daily Media independently confirmed the announcement.
