Amsterdam Airport Schiphol Posted by Silvanus_Tauris on November 5, 2022

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the main international airport of the Netherlands. It is located 9 kilometres southwest of Amsterdam, in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer in the province of North Holland. It is the world's third busiest airport by international passenger traffic in 2021. With almost 72 million passengers in 2019, it is the third-busiest airport in Europe in terms of passenger volume and the busiest in Europe in terms of aircraft movements. With an annual cargo tonnage of 1.74 million, it is the 4th busiest in Europe. AMS covers a total area of 6,887 acres of land. The airport is built on the single-terminal concept: one large terminal split into three large departure halls.

Schiphol is the hub for KLM and its regional affiliate KLM Cityhopper as well as for Corendon Dutch Airlines, Martinair, Transavia and TUI fly Netherlands. The airport also serves as a base for EasyJet.

Schiphol opened on 16 September 1916 as a military airbase. The end of the First World War also saw the beginning of civilian use of Schiphol Airport and the airport eventually lost its military role completely. By 1940, Schiphol had four asphalt runways at 45-degree angles. The airport was captured by the German military that same year and renamed Fliegerhorst Schiphol. The airport was destroyed through bombing but at the end of the war, the airfield was soon rebuilt. In 1949, it was decided that Schiphol was to become the primary airport of the Netherlands. Schiphol Airport was voted the Best Airport in Western Europe in 2020.

Don't linger Posted by david on July 31, 2019

I've traveled to and through here quite a bit over the past few years, because of work. It's an OK terminal, but it's not designed for you to linger anywhere (until your gate is open). Just keep moving.

Also, food vendors ask to see your boarding pass, which is a bit strange.

Train connections are excellent. Don't even *think* about getting into Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, etc any other way.

Best transit airport in the world Posted by Jogge on October 23, 2017

in my opinion, everything run above standard, security, immigration, connections and transfer service, restaurants, shops, areas to rest etc.

Danger here night shoot out here

Bathrooms not clean Posted by on March 21, 2016

We arrived at 6:45 am and the bathrooms were unclean. I was excited to return to the US via Europe from Africa especially for the bathrooms. But your bathrooms were unclean and many were not working! Also, when you remodel you need to make more women's bathrooms -the lines were crazy long. I was just bewildered that your bathrooms were this poor.

Security Posted by on May 27, 2015

Unbelievably to strict and obtrusive! Rude and unnessasary! I won't recommend going to Netherlands if people are that rude! I won't ever come thru this airport again either!!!

Turkish Airlines Crash Posted by david on February 25, 2009

This morning, Turkish Airlines flight 1951, a Boeing 737, made what appears to be a forced landing in a field 1.5 nm short of runway 18R at Schipol. Most of the passengers survived, but there were nine fatalities:

Easy airport Posted by david on June 15, 2008

I visited Schiphol for the second time in 2006. It was simple, fast, and well-organized, with virtually no waiting time for customs. Easy and inexpensive to get into Amsterdam (or to other parts of Holland) by rail. Coming from North America, you're far better connecting here than Heathrow for visiting the continent.

Good organised Posted by PGJS on June 15, 2008

I often visit this airport, and I always feel comfortable, since everything is well-organised. There has been a period that to passing security check-in took long cueing, but that also seems to be resolved by now.

Excellent hub airport. So many people go through there in transit and it's well set up for it. Even after 9/11, I was able to easily leave the airport for a tour of Amsterdam and come back with litlle hassle. Even the attractions at the airport are nice.

Nice Airport Posted by Bonnie on July 17, 2007

Landed here in 1997 ... flying with two children under 5. I was half asleep, but remember the bathrooms being very clean, and the terminal being very easy to navigate.
