Manchester Airport (IATA: MAN, ICAO: EGCC) is the principal international gateway for the North of England and the UK's busiest airport outside the London region. It serves as a crucial hub for both leisure and business travel, connecting Greater Manchester to over 200 destinations worldwide.

Originally opened in 1938 as Ringway Airport, it played a significant role during the Second World War as RAF Ringway, a base for aircraft production and parachute training. Post-war, it steadily grew into a major civil airport, welcoming its first million passengers in 1962 and later becoming one of the few UK airports to operate the Concorde. Its two full-length runways and ongoing development, including the significant expansion of Terminal 2, underscore its national importance.

The airport is located approximately nine miles southwest of Manchester city centre. It is directly accessible from the M56 motorway, making it convenient for travellers arriving by car. Public transport is integrated through "The Station," a multi-modal hub connecting the airport's terminals to the national rail network, with direct trains to Manchester Piccadilly and other major cities. The Metrolink tram system also provides a direct, frequent service to the city centre and surrounding areas.

Manchester Airport handles a diverse range of operations, from domestic and short-haul European flights to extensive long-haul international services. It is a major base for airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet, Jet2.com, and TUI Airways, and a key UK airport for carriers including Virgin Atlantic and Emirates. In a typical year, it handles well over 25 million passengers.

The airport comprises three passenger terminals (Terminals 1, 2, and 3), which are interconnected by a Skylink walkway. Each terminal provides a full range of traveler amenities, including numerous shops, restaurants, bars, currency exchange services, and duty-free outlets. Multiple pay-per-use and airline-specific lounges are available across all terminals. A recent, multi-billion-pound transformation project has significantly upgraded and expanded the facilities in Terminal 2.

For a smooth journey, travelers are advised to arrive two to three hours before short-haul flights and at least three hours prior to long-haul departures. When connecting between flights, allow sufficient time to travel between terminals, as walking distances can be considerable, particularly to and from the newly expanded section of Terminal 2.
