- Efficient Security (at times): Some travelers have reported quick and efficient security experiences, taking under 10 minutes to pass through, particularly on quieter days or with fast-track options.
- Good Local Transport Links: The airport is noted for its good connections to Birmingham and Coventry, and broader UK connectivity via nearby motorways.
- Refurbished Departure Areas: The departure area for Gates 1-20 has been described as clean and recently refurbished.
- Investment in Passenger Experience: Birmingham Airport is investing £50 million in a new central security area and has launched an AI-powered assistant, BABS, to provide real-time updates and guidance, aiming to improve efficiency and reduce waiting times.
- Long Queues and Congestion: Frequent and significant queues are a major complaint, affecting check-in, security, and baggage reclaim, sometimes lasting over an hour or even 2-3 hours during peak times. This is often exacerbated by ongoing building work.
- Ongoing Renovation Work: Extensive renovation and building work across the terminal have led to chaotic conditions, diversions, and disruption to facilities like escalators and lifts.
- Substandard Toilet Facilities: Many reviews highlight dirty, broken, or poorly maintained toilets with issues like non-flushing cubicles and lack of grab rails in accessible facilities.
- Staff Impatience and Communication Issues: Some travelers have reported impatient or sharp security staff, and a disconnect in communication regarding special assistance needs, leading to delays for vulnerable passengers.
- Expensive Drop-off Parking: The quick drop-off car park at the terminal is noted as "hideously expensive," with a free car park option being a considerable walk away.
Bottom line: Birmingham Airport is in a period of significant transition, aiming to accommodate growing passenger numbers and enhance facilities. While current experiences can be challenging due to ongoing construction and associated queues, there's a clear effort to improve infrastructure and passenger services, with new security measures and digital assistance tools being introduced. Travelers are advised to allow ample time for their journeys, especially during peak periods.
