Founded by JRD Tata in 1932, Air India pioneered India's aviation sector and served as the country's first airline. After 69 years as a government-owned enterprise, it returned to the Tata Group in January 2022, becoming fully privatized. Air India is the flag carrier of India, headquartered in Gurugram, Haryana. Its primary hub is Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi, with secondary hubs at Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.
As of April 14, 2025, Air India's fleet comprises 198 aircraft, including a mix of Airbus A350-900s, A320neo, A320ceo, A321neo, A321ceo, A319s, and Boeing B787-8, B787-9, B777-200LR, and B777-300ER models. The airline has also placed the largest single order for new aircraft in aviation history, comprising over 500 wide and narrow-body aircraft, to support its transformation and growth. Air India operates an extensive global network, spanning 31 countries across five continents, connecting India with cities in North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Australia, Africa, and the Gulf. As of April 30, 2025, it operates close to 5,000 flights a week to and from 49 domestic and 42 international destinations. Air India is a member of Star Alliance, offering seamless connectivity to passengers. The airline offers Business Class and provides Wi-Fi internet connectivity on board domestic and international flights operated by Airbus A350, Boeing 787-9, and select Airbus A321neo aircraft, making it the first Indian carrier to offer inflight Wi-Fi within India.
