## Ethiopian Airlines: Africa's Aviation Giant
###
Ethiopian Airlines (ICAO: ETH) is the flag carrier of Ethiopia, wholly owned by the country's government. Founded on December 21, 1945, and commencing operations on April 8, 1946, as Ethiopian Air Lines (EAL), the airline initially received management assistance from Transcontinental Air Transport (TWA). It officially became Ethiopian Airlines in 1965. Over its nearly eight decades of operation, Ethiopian Airlines has grown to become Africa's largest airline in terms of passengers carried, destinations served, fleet size, and revenue.
The airline's main hub and operational base is Bole International Airport (ADD) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which has been expanded to handle 22 million passengers annually. It also utilizes secondary hubs in Lomé, Togo, and Lilongwe, Malawi, as well as a dedicated cargo hub in Liège, Belgium. Ethiopian Airlines operates a diverse and modern fleet of over 160 aircraft, with an average age of less than seven years, and has more than 100 ultramodern aircraft on order. Its fleet includes Airbus A350 (A350-900, A350-1000), Boeing 737 (737-700, 737-800, 737 MAX 8), Boeing 767 (767-300ER), Boeing 777 (777-200LR, 777-300ER, and freighter variants), Boeing 787 Dreamliner (787-8, 787-9), and Bombardier Dash Q-400 turboprops.
Ethiopian Airlines boasts an extensive route network, serving 155 passenger destinations—22 of which are domestic—and 68 freighter destinations globally. It provides wide-ranging connectivity across Africa, flying to 65 African cities, and links its Addis Ababa hub to numerous international passenger and cargo destinations across five continents, making it the world's fourth-largest airline by the number of countries served. Since December 2011, Ethiopian Airlines has been a proud member of Star Alliance, the world's largest global airline alliance, offering its customers access to over 1,300 destinations worldwide. Notable services include its Cloud Nine (Business Class) and Economy Class, and it offers amenities like the Skylight In-Terminal Hotel at Addis Ababa Bole International Airport for transiting travelers.
