Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN), located in Guangzhou's Huadu District, serves as a primary aviation gateway for southern China and the Pearl River Delta. It is a major hub for China Southern Airlines and consistently ranks among the world's busiest airports by passenger traffic. The current airport opened on August 5, 2004, replacing the older, similarly named airport closer to the city center. This move accommodated significant growth in regional and international travel, establishing Guangzhou as a key transfer point for passengers traveling between Europe, Oceania, and other parts of Asia.

Situated approximately 28 kilometers (17 miles) north of downtown Guangzhou, the airport is well-connected to the city. The most direct public transport option is the Guangzhou Metro's Line 3 (North Extension), which has stations serving both terminals. A network of airport express buses also provides convenient service to various districts within Guangzhou and to neighboring cities like Shenzhen and Foshan. Taxis and ride-hailing services are readily available, though travel times can vary significantly depending on traffic conditions.

The airport handles a high volume of domestic, regional, and international flights. As the main base for China Southern Airlines, it offers an extensive network across China and to destinations worldwide. Other major carriers operating from Baiyun include Shenzhen Airlines, Air China, and numerous international airlines. In 2023, the airport handled over 63 million passengers, making it the busiest in China. The airport operates with two large terminal buildings, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, which are connected by a free shuttle bus and the metro.

Both terminals are equipped with a full range of traveler amenities. Passengers will find numerous dining options, from fast-food chains to sit-down restaurants offering local Cantonese cuisine. Retail facilities include duty-free shops, luxury brand boutiques, and convenience stores. Multiple airline and pay-per-use lounges are available for travelers seeking more comfort. For those with long layovers, several hotels are located on or near the airport grounds.

For a smooth experience, travelers should plan to arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight and three to four hours before an international departure. Immigration and security checks can have long queues during peak periods. When making a connection, it is important to verify which terminal your connecting flight departs from, as transferring between Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 requires a short journey via metro or shuttle.
