Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG)

Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), also known as Roissy Airport, is the largest international airport in France and a primary aviation hub for Europe. As the principal base for the nation's flag carrier, Air France, it connects Paris with destinations across the globe. Opened in March 1974 and named after the former French president, the airport is recognized for its distinctive modern architecture, particularly the original Terminal 1, a circular, ten-story building designed by Paul Andreu. Its strategic importance has grown over the decades, making it a critical node for both passenger and cargo traffic within the global aviation network.

Located in Roissy-en-France, approximately 25 kilometers (16 miles) northeast of central Paris, the airport is accessible via multiple transportation methods. The RER B suburban train line is a popular and direct public transport link, connecting the airport's two train stations to major city-center hubs like Gare du Nord and Châtelet–Les Halles. The Roissybus provides a dedicated coach service to the Opéra Garnier area, while official taxis offer fixed-rate fares to the city's Right and Left Banks. Major motorways also provide direct road access for private cars and ride-sharing services.

CDG handles a high volume of international, European (Schengen and non-Schengen), and domestic flights, consistently ranking among the busiest airports in Europe. The airport is structured into three main terminals. Terminal 1 serves mostly international carriers. Terminal 2 is a sprawling complex of seven sub-terminals (2A through 2G) that primarily hosts Air France, its SkyTeam alliance partners, and other major airlines. Terminal 3 is dedicated to low-cost and charter carriers. These terminals are equipped with extensive amenities, including duty-free shopping, a wide range of restaurants and cafes, airline lounges, and currency exchange services. The free CDGVAL automated light rail system and shuttle buses connect the various terminals and parking areas.

For travelers, it is advisable to arrive at least three hours before an international departure and two hours for Schengen or domestic flights due to the airport's size and potential for long queues. Navigating between terminals, especially the different sections of Terminal 2, can be time-consuming. Passengers with connecting flights should verify their arrival and departure terminals in advance and allow ample time for transfers, which may require walking, a bus ride, or the CDGVAL train.
