San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport (OAK), a large public airport, serves as a key transportation hub for the San Francisco Bay Area, particularly for the East Bay cities of Oakland, Berkeley, and the surrounding region. It functions as a popular alternative to San Francisco International Airport (SFO), often favored for its accessibility and strong presence of low-cost carriers. The airport plays a significant role in both passenger and cargo transport for Northern California.

Opened in 1927 and dedicated by famed aviator Charles Lindbergh, OAK has a distinguished place in aviation history. It served as the departure point for several historic flights, including Amelia Earhart's final attempt to circumnavigate the globe in 1937. During World War II, it was transformed into a major military air base for transporting aircraft and personnel to the Pacific Theater.

The airport is located approximately 10 miles south of downtown Oakland, on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. Travelers can reach it via Interstate 880, with extensive options for on-site and off-site parking. Public transportation is a prominent feature, with an elevated rail connector linking the terminals directly to the regional Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system, which provides service to Oakland, San Francisco, and other Bay Area cities. Taxis, ride-sharing services, and AC Transit buses also serve the airport.

OAK’s operations are heavily focused on domestic flights across the United States, with Southwest Airlines maintaining a major base and operating the majority of flights. Other significant carriers include Spirit, Allegiant, and Alaska Airlines. The airport also offers a number of international flights, primarily to destinations in Mexico. In addition to serving millions of passengers annually, OAK is one of the busiest cargo airports in the country, largely due to a major hub for FedEx Express.

The airport features two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, which are connected post-security, allowing passengers to walk between them without exiting the secure area. Facilities include a range of restaurants, cafes, and retail stores. For passenger comfort, there is a common-use Escape Lounge in Terminal 1, accessible to any traveler for a fee, regardless of airline. A consolidated rental car center is located a short shuttle ride away from the terminals.

For a smooth experience, travelers should plan to arrive 90 minutes before a domestic flight and two to three hours before an international departure. Using the BART system is often an efficient way to avoid road traffic when traveling to or from San Francisco and other connected cities. Because the two terminals are connected, transferring between flights on different airlines is a straightforward process that does not require re-clearing security. Ride-share pickups occur at a designated area on the second curb of the terminal roadway.
