Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW)

Chicago Midway International Airport (MDW) serves as the second-largest airport in the Chicago metropolitan area, offering a convenient alternative to the larger O'Hare International Airport. Valued for its proximity to the city center, Midway is a major point-to-point airport and a significant operational base for low-cost carriers, playing a key role in the region's air travel network.

Opened in 1927 as Chicago Municipal Airport, it was once the world's busiest airport. In 1949, it was renamed to commemorate the pivotal World War II Battle of Midway. Its prominence waned with the advent of larger jet aircraft that required longer runways than Midway could accommodate, leading to the rise of O'Hare. However, the airport experienced a major resurgence, becoming a key hub for airlines specializing in domestic, point-to-point service.

Located on the city's Southwest Side, approximately 12 miles from the downtown Loop, Midway is easily accessible. The most direct public transit option is the Chicago Transit Authority's (CTA) Orange Line 'L' train, which connects the airport terminal directly to downtown via an enclosed walkway. Travelers can also utilize CTA buses, taxis, rideshare services, and personal vehicles via the Stevenson Expressway (I-55). A multi-level parking garage is attached to the terminal building for convenient access.

Midway primarily handles domestic flights, with some international services to destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean. Southwest Airlines is the dominant carrier, operating the vast majority of flights from the airport. Other airlines serving Midway include Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines, Allegiant Air, and Avelo Airlines. The airport consistently serves millions of passengers annually.

The airport features a single, modern terminal building with three concourses (A, B, and C) connected post-security. After clearing the central security checkpoint, passengers enter a large food court with numerous dining and retail options. Additional shops and restaurants are located throughout the concourses. Free Wi-Fi is available across the terminal, and a USO Lounge provides services for military personnel and their families.

For a smooth travel experience, it is advisable to arrive 90 minutes to two hours before domestic flights, as security lines can be lengthy during peak periods. The CTA Orange Line is often the fastest and most economical way to reach downtown, avoiding potential road traffic. Since all gates are located within a single secure area, making flight connections is a straightforward process that does not require passing through security again.
