Approximately July 2010. The heliport ceased operations concurrently with the opening of the new Sana Klinikum Offenbach building. The old hospital building, along with the heliport on its roof, was subsequently demolished between 2010 and 2012.
The closure was a direct result of a planned hospital modernization and replacement project. The old Klinikum Offenbach building, which housed the DE-0918 heliport, was decommissioned and demolished to make way for the new, state-of-the-art Sana Klinikum. The heliport was not closed due to economic reasons, accidents, or regulatory non-compliance, but was instead replaced by a superior facility.
The site of the original heliport (DE-0918) no longer exists. The building it was on has been completely demolished. The area at the specified coordinates is now part of the redeveloped modern hospital campus, featuring green spaces, access roads, and parking facilities for the new hospital building.
This rooftop heliport was a vital part of the emergency medical services (EMS) for the city of Offenbach and the densely populated Rhine-Main region. It served the Klinikum Offenbach, a major trauma center. For many years, it was the primary landing site for the renowned German air rescue helicopter 'Christoph 2', operated by ADAC Luftrettung. The heliport enabled the rapid transfer of critically ill and severely injured patients, significantly reducing transport times and improving patient outcomes.
There are zero prospects for reopening the original heliport (DE-0918) as it has been physically destroyed. However, its function was not eliminated but rather upgraded and relocated. A new, larger, and more modern rooftop heliport was constructed on top of the new Sana Klinikum Offenbach building, located just a short distance away. This new, fully operational heliport is registered with the ICAO code **EDFO** and continues to serve the hospital and the regional air rescue network.
