August Euler Airfield (DE-0003), also known as Griesheim Airport, is a private airfield located in Griesheim, within the Darmstadt-Dieburg district of Hesse, Germany. It is situated approximately 1.6 km (1 mile) southwest of Griesheim.
This historic site is Germany's oldest airfield, established in 1908 by aviation pioneer August Euler, who founded the first German aircraft factory and aviation school here. The airfield, with coordinates 49°51′14″N 008°35′10″E, features a single paved asphalt runway (07/25), which is approximately 1,688 meters (5,571 feet) long, though some sources indicate different lengths at various points in its history. Currently, the runway and landing strip are primarily used for teaching and research purposes by the Technische Universität Darmstadt, which gained full ownership in 2005. A significant portion of the airfield is also designated as a nature reserve.
Historically, the airfield served as a Prussian army "Fliegerstation Griesheim", a World War I prisoner-of-war camp, a Luftwaffe research and training center during World War II, and a U.S. Army Airfield (Griesheim Army Airfield or Darmstadt Army Airfield) until its closure in 1992. The German Gliding Research Institute (DFS) was also once based here, and a wind tunnel built in 1936 continues to be used by the university for aerodynamic research.
