Notable features or history: Designed in 1949 by the French Army and built by German contractors between 1951 and 1953, Ramstein Air Base officially opened as Ramstein Air Station in 1953. In 1957, it was consolidated with Landstuhl Air Base to become "Ramstein–Landstuhl Air Base," and was officially named "Ramstein Air Base" in 1961. From 2004 to 2006, the base underwent significant expansion, including a new airport terminal, as part of the Rhein-Main Transition Program, which transferred capacities from the closed Rhein-Main Air Base. The base is part of the larger Kaiserslautern Military Community (KMC), which houses approximately 54,000 American service members and over 5,400 U.S. civilian employees. Historically, it was also in close proximity to the Air Defense Operations Center (ADOC) — Kindsbach, an underground combat operations center.
Current status: Ramstein Air Base is operational. It hosts over 16,200 military personnel, U.S. civilians, and contractors, and employs more than 6,200 German workers. The base continues to serve as a critical hub for US Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa and NATO Allied Air Command.
