Frankfurt-Egelsbach Airport (ICAO: EDFE) is a public general aviation airport located near Egelsbach, Hesse, Germany, approximately 10 km southeast of Frankfurt Airport. It is the busiest regional airport for general aviation in Germany, with over 80,000 flight movements per year.
The airport's roots trace back to 1953, with official operations beginning in 1955. Initially, it had a grass airstrip, and by 1957, it recorded 37,000 movements annually, with one-third being glider planes. A significant development occurred in 1966 with the inauguration of a 900-meter concrete runway, leading to an increase in flight movements to over 100,000 yearly. In 1961, glider plane use was banned, making Egelsbach Germany's first motor-only airport for general aviation. The runway was extended to 1,400 meters in 2004 to accommodate larger aircraft.
The airport currently has two runways: a 1,400 by 25 meter asphalt runway and a 670 by 30 meter grass runway, both oriented 08/26. It serves as an attractive business location, housing over 30 companies, including airline carriers, aviation businesses, flight schools, and clubs, employing over 700 people. Since January 2020, TRIWO AG has been the majority shareholder. The airport offers services such as aircraft and helicopter chartering, sightseeing trips, and pilot training. There are no scheduled airline services.
