The airport was replaced by the larger, more modern Frankfurt Rhein-Main Airport (the current FRA). The Rebstock site had become too small to handle the increasing size of aircraft and the growing volume of air traffic in the 1930s. Its location, close to the city center, prevented any significant expansion.
The site has been completely redeveloped and repurposed. The former airfield is now home to the Rebstockpark, a large public park, and the Rebstockbad, a major public swimming and leisure complex. The surrounding land has been developed into residential areas, commercial properties, and is adjacent to the Messe Frankfurt (Frankfurt Trade Fair) grounds. There are no visible remnants of the original runways or hangars.
Opened in 1912 as the 'Flug- und Luftschiffhafen am Rebstock' (Airfield and Airship Port at Rebstock), it was Frankfurt's first airport. It was a globally significant hub for Zeppelin airships, serving as a primary base for DELAG (Deutsche Luftschiffahrts-Aktiengesellschaft), the world's first airline. Famous airships, including the LZ 127 'Graf Zeppelin', operated regular passenger and mail flights from here. In addition to airships, it handled Frankfurt's fixed-wing aircraft traffic, playing a pioneering role in the development of civil aviation and international airmail services until its closure to civil traffic in 1936. After 1936, the site saw some limited military use by the Luftwaffe before and during WWII, but its primary role as a civil airport had ended.
None. The land is a fully integrated and densely utilized part of Frankfurt's urban landscape. Reopening it as an airport is impossible due to the existing residential, commercial, and recreational developments. There are no plans or discussions whatsoever to revert the site to aviation use.
