Approximately late 2006 to early 2007. The final operating permit expired, and operations ceased definitively around this period.
The closure was primarily due to environmental and zoning issues. The airfield's environmental permit (milieuvergunning) was not renewed by the Flemish authorities. Key contributing factors included: its location within a designated 'green zone' (groengebied), persistent noise complaints from residents of the increasingly suburbanized surrounding area, and pressure from the adjacent Royal Keerbergen Golfclub, which had expanded over the years. The combination of regulatory hurdles and local opposition made continued operation untenable.
The site of the former airfield has been completely de-commissioned and re-naturalized. The land has been absorbed into the surrounding 'Kruisheide' nature and recreation area and is partially integrated with the Royal Keerbergen Golfclub. The runway is no longer distinguishable, having reverted to a grassy field used by walkers and for other recreational purposes. All aviation infrastructure, including hangars and the clubhouse, has been demolished and removed.
Keerbergen Airfield was a prominent private general aviation (GA) and ultralight (ULM) airfield established after World War II. It was a beloved hub for recreational pilots and home to the 'Keerbergense Vliegclub' (Keerbergen Flying Club). The airfield featured a single grass runway, typically designated 06/24, and served as an important center for flight training and leisure flying in the region. While not a major commercial or military installation, it held significant value for the local aviation community for several decades, fostering a passion for flight and serving as a social gathering point for pilots and enthusiasts.
There are no known plans or credible prospects for reopening Keerbergen Airfield. The legal, environmental, and political obstacles that led to its closure remain and have likely intensified. The land has been officially repurposed for nature and recreation, and the surrounding residential development has increased, making a return to aviation activities virtually impossible. The site's future is firmly established as a non-aviation, green space.
