Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG) serves as the primary aviation gateway to the world-renowned Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site in China’s Hunan province. Its strategic importance is tied directly to the region's tourism industry, providing essential access for visitors traveling to see the dramatic sandstone pillars that inspired landscapes in the film *Avatar*. While classified as a small airport, it is a vital and busy hub for both domestic and international tourists.

Originally opened in 1994 as Dayong Airport, it was later expanded and renamed Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport. It officially gained international status in 2011, reflecting its growing role in global tourism. A significant upgrade occurred in 2015 with the opening of a modern new terminal (T2), which now handles all passenger traffic and has substantially increased the airport's capacity and efficiency. The airport is located in the Yongding District, conveniently situated just six kilometers from the Zhangjiajie city center and approximately 35 kilometers from the main entrance to the Wulingyuan Scenic Area. This proximity to the city makes initial transfers straightforward, with travelers commonly using taxis, ride-hailing services, or airport shuttle buses for the short journey.

Operationally, the airport is predominantly focused on domestic routes, connecting Zhangjiajie with major Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu. Key carriers include China Southern Airlines, Air China, and Sichuan Airlines. It also accommodates a limited number of international and regional flights, which are often seasonal or charter-based, linking to destinations like Seoul, Bangkok, and Taipei. Before the global travel downturn, the airport handled nearly three million passengers annually.

The modern terminal building offers essential facilities for travelers. It is equipped with a selection of restaurants, cafes, and retail shops offering local souvenirs and travel necessities. Free Wi-Fi is available, and there are VIP lounges for eligible passengers. For practical travel planning, it is advisable for passengers on domestic flights to arrive at least 90 minutes before departure. Transportation to the Wulingyuan scenic area can be arranged via pre-booked private cars or by taking a taxi to the Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station for onward connections. While signage is available in English, having hotel addresses and destinations written in Chinese can be helpful when communicating with drivers.
