Approximately early 2017
Regulatory/Zoning. The airfield operated for about 25 years on a series of temporary permits. In late 2016, the municipal council of Oss, the governing body for the area, made a final decision not to renew the permit. The primary reason was the desire to enforce the local zoning plan, which designated the land for agricultural use, and to end the long-standing temporary exception for the airfield.
The site has been fully decommissioned as an airfield and has been returned to its designated agricultural purpose. Satellite imagery shows the land is now used as farmland, and the former grass runway is no longer distinguishable from the surrounding fields.
Kessel Airfield, also known as 'Vliegveld Kessel', was a small, private grass airstrip. It was not a major commercial or military airport. Its significance was primarily local, serving as a base for recreational flying, specifically for ultralight (UL/ULV) aircraft. For approximately 25 years, it was a hub for local aviation enthusiasts and provided a facility for the storage and operation of their private aircraft.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The closure was the result of a definitive and final zoning decision by the local government. Re-establishing the airfield would require a significant change in municipal policy and zoning laws, which is considered highly unlikely.
