Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is a major public airport and one of the busiest in the United States, serving as a critical hub for the American Southwest. Originally a private airfield opened in 1929, it was purchased by the City of Phoenix in 1935. Its role expanded significantly during World War II when it functioned as a military air base, which spurred major development. The airport's subsequent growth has mirrored that of the Phoenix metropolitan area, establishing it as a key economic engine for Arizona and a primary gateway for tourists and business travelers.

The airport's location is exceptionally convenient, situated just three miles east of downtown Phoenix. This proximity allows for quick transfers to the city center and surrounding business districts. Travelers can access PHX via major highways, including Interstate 10 and the Loop 202 freeway. Public transportation is facilitated by the free PHX Sky Train, which operates 24/7. The train connects both airport terminals with economy parking, the Rental Car Center, and the 44th Street/Washington Valley Metro Rail station, providing a direct link to the regional light rail system. Taxis, shuttles, and rideshare services are also readily available from designated pickup areas.

Sky Harbor handles tens of millions of passengers annually, offering extensive domestic flights and service to numerous international destinations. It serves as a primary hub for American Airlines and a major operating base for Southwest Airlines, which together account for the majority of its passenger traffic. The airport operates two terminals: Terminal 3 and the larger Terminal 4. While the terminals are not connected post-security, the PHX Sky Train provides efficient pre-security transfers between them. Both terminals offer a wide array of passenger amenities, including numerous shops, diverse dining options featuring local Arizona cuisine, multiple airline lounges, and complimentary Wi-Fi access throughout.

For a smooth travel experience, passengers are advised to arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international departure, especially during peak seasons. The PHX Sky Train is the most reliable method for connecting between Terminals 3 and 4 and for reaching the Rental Car Center or the Valley Metro Rail. All ground transportation is located outside the baggage claim areas, with clear signage to guide travelers. The airport is known for its relatively user-friendly layout, but security checkpoints can become congested during peak travel times.
