Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD), located in Chicago, Illinois, is a primary gateway for the United States and a major global aviation hub. It serves as a critical connection point for passengers traveling domestically and internationally, handling tens of millions of travelers annually. Its extensive network of routes links Chicago to hundreds of destinations across North America and the world.

The airport's history began during World War II as a manufacturing plant for Douglas C-54 transport aircraft. It was named Orchard Field Airport, the source of its "ORD" airport code. In 1949, it was renamed in honor of Medal of Honor recipient and naval aviator Edward "Butch" O'Hare. The airport opened to commercial flights in 1955 and grew rapidly, becoming a central piece of the U.S. air travel system by the 1960s.

Situated approximately 17 miles northwest of downtown Chicago's Loop, O'Hare is accessible via multiple transportation methods. The Chicago Transit Authority's (CTA) Blue Line train offers a direct and economical 24-hour connection to the city center. The airport is also served by major expressways, including I-90 and I-294, making it reachable by car, taxi, rideshare services, and regional buses. Metra's North Central Service provides a commuter rail link on weekdays.

As a major hub for United Airlines and American Airlines, O'Hare's operations are vast. The airport accommodates a high volume of both domestic and international flights, making it one of the world's busiest airports by aircraft movements and passenger traffic. It features four primary passenger terminals: Terminals 1, 2, and 3 primarily handle domestic flights, while Terminal 5 is the main international terminal for arrivals and departures. An automated people mover, the Airport Transit System (ATS), connects all terminals, the Multi-Modal Facility for rental cars and parking, and the Metra station. Travelers will find a wide array of amenities, including numerous restaurants, retail shops, airline lounges, and public art installations.

For a smooth travel experience, passengers are advised to arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international one, as security screening times can be significant. When connecting between the domestic terminals (1, 2, 3) and the international Terminal 5, travelers must use the ATS, which operates outside the secure area, necessitating another security screening. The CTA Blue Line is often the most reliable and cost-effective option for reaching downtown, avoiding potential traffic congestion.
