Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT)

Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), located in Charlotte, North Carolina, is a major public and military-use airport that serves as a primary gateway to the Southeastern United States. As the second-largest hub for American Airlines, it ranks among the busiest airports in the world for aircraft movements and passenger traffic, handling a significant volume of both origin/destination and connecting travelers.

Originally opened in 1936 as Charlotte Municipal Airport, it was renamed Douglas Municipal Airport in 1954 in honor of former Charlotte Mayor Ben Elbert Douglas Sr. The airport gained its current name in 1982. Its role as a major hub was cemented through its history with Piedmont Airlines, which established a significant presence there before its merger with US Airways. The subsequent merger of US Airways and American Airlines solidified CLT's position as a critical connection point in the national and international air travel network.

The airport is situated approximately six miles west of downtown Charlotte. It is conveniently accessible from major highways, including Interstate 85 and the Billy Graham Parkway. Most travelers arrive by personal vehicle, rental car, or ride-sharing services. Public transportation is available via the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) Sprinter bus, which provides a direct connection between the airport and the city center, including a stop at the LYNX Blue Line light rail.

CLT handles extensive domestic service across the United States, along with international flights to destinations in Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, South America, and Europe. The airport consists of a single, large terminal building connected to five concourses (A, B, C, D, and E). The central atrium serves as the main hub for passenger activity, featuring a wide array of shops, local and national restaurant chains, and traveler services. Notable amenities include several airline lounges, pet relief areas, nursing rooms, and free Wi-Fi. The airport is also well-known for its numerous white rocking chairs scattered throughout the concourses, offering a unique place for passengers to relax.

For a smooth travel experience, passengers are advised to arrive at least two hours before a domestic flight and three hours before an international departure, as security checkpoints can experience long waits during peak periods. Because all concourses are connected post-security, transferring between flights is straightforward and does not require re-screening. All ground transportation services, including taxis, ride-sharing pickups, and rental car shuttles, are located on the terminal's lower level (baggage claim).
