Piedmont Airlines (ICAO: PDT) is an American regional airline operating under the American Eagle brand, serving as a wholly-owned subsidiary of the American Airlines Group.
Piedmont Airlines traces its roots back to Henson Aviation, founded in 1961 by Richard A. Henson, which began scheduled passenger service in 1962 as the Hagerstown Commuter. The airline was rebranded as Piedmont Airlines in 1993, a name formerly used by an unrelated major carrier (1948-1989) that had merged with USAir, to protect the trademark. Today, Piedmont is a vital regional component of the American Airlines Group.
The airline's primary operational base and headquarters are located at the Salisbury Regional Airport in Maryland. Its main hubs are Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT), with additional crew bases in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Piedmont operates a fleet exclusively consisting of Embraer ERJ 145 regional jet aircraft. As of late 2025, its active fleet numbers approximately 70 Embraer 145s.
Piedmont's route network primarily focuses on regional markets throughout the eastern United States, connecting passengers to major American Airlines hubs and focus cities. The airline operates approximately 400 daily departures to over 50 destinations, including services extending to Canada, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands under the American Eagle brand. As a subsidiary of American Airlines, Piedmont is integrated into the Oneworld Alliance network. As a regional carrier operating the Embraer ERJ-145, notable services or cabin classes beyond standard economy are generally limited, with no Wi-Fi and typically offering only non-alcoholic beverages without snacks on many flights.
