Approximately early 2018
The aerodrome was a private facility owned and operated by local businessman and pilot Henry Little. It ceased operations following the death of Mr. Little in January 2018. As is common with private airfields, without the owner and primary operator to maintain and manage it, the facility was closed and not passed on for aviation use.
The site is no longer an active aerodrome. Satellite imagery confirms the grass runway is unmaintained, overgrown, and has reverted to agricultural use, likely as pasture or a hay field, blending in with the surrounding farmland. The hangar structure may still exist on the property, but the landing strip itself is not usable for aircraft.
Moneygall Aerodrome was a private grass airstrip used for general aviation and recreational flying. Its primary historical significance stems from its connection to the May 2011 visit of US President Barack Obama to his ancestral home in Moneygall. The aerodrome's owner, Henry Little, was an eighth cousin of the President and the airstrip gained media attention as a symbol of the local connection. While the President's official transport used major airports for security and logistical reasons, the small aerodrome became a point of interest during the visit. Operations were limited to light aircraft capable of utilizing its 600-meter grass runway.
There are no known or reported plans to reopen Moneygall Aerodrome. As a private asset, any future use for aviation would be solely at the discretion and expense of the current landowners. Given that it has been inactive since 2018 and the land has reverted to agriculture, reopening is considered highly unlikely.
