Type of facility and operations: The airport has a grooved asphalt runway (08/26) with a length of 1289 meters (4230 ft). Its runway length restricts scheduled services to turboprop aircraft or small executive jets. Navigational aids such as ILS, LLZ, GP, NDB, and DME are temporarily out of service. The airport's operational hours are Monday to Friday, 09:00-17:00, with other hours available on request. Fuel (Jet A1) is available, but Avgas 100LL is not currently offered. De-icing services are temporarily out of service.
Notable features or history: A landing ground was established in nearby Oranmore in 1918 for the Royal Flying Corps. Aer Arann, a local airline, began operations from a strip built by Ernest Steiner at Carnmore in 1974. The runway was extended to 1,200 meters in 1987. In 1988, Aer Lingus reintroduced a Dublin route, and Ryanair launched a London Luton route. Aer Arann began a state-funded Dublin route in 1994, and by 2007, Galway was the fastest-growing airport in Ireland, serving 16 destinations and over 300,000 passengers annually.
Current status: Galway Airport ceased scheduled passenger traffic on October 31, 2011, when Aer Arann suspended commercial operations due to the withdrawal of government funding. The airport briefly reopened for commercial flights in 2015 under the operation of Carnmore Aviation Ltd., but it has since closed to commercial traffic. As of now, it is primarily used by the Galway Flying Club. Galway City Council and Galway County Council purchased the site in 2013 and are currently inviting expressions of interest for the sale and future economic development of the 118-acre site, which includes two hangar buildings and a carpark. The site is considered vital for the economic growth of the Galway Metropolitan Area.
