Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Late 2018 / Early 2019

Reason for Closure

Economic reasons, specifically the sale of the land for large-scale residential development. The landowner sold the site to property developers (CALA Homes), making its continued use as an airfield financially unviable and physically impossible. The value of the land for housing far exceeded its value as a general aviation airfield.

Current Status

The site has been completely and permanently redeveloped. The runways, hangars, and all aviation infrastructure have been removed. In its place is a large housing estate named 'Aspen Park Haddenham'. The developers have paid homage to the site's history by naming new roads after aviation themes, such as 'Airfield Road', 'Runway Piece', and 'Spitfire Way'. The coordinates provided now point to the middle of this residential area.

Historical Significance

The airfield had significant historical importance dating back to World War II. It was originally opened in 1941 as RAF Thame (Station 110). Its primary role during the war was as a training facility, most notably for the No. 1 Glider Training School, which trained pilots for airborne operations using General Aircraft Hotspur gliders towed by de Havilland Tiger Moth and Hawker Hector aircraft. After the war, it was decommissioned by the RAF in 1946 and transitioned to civilian use. It became a popular and vibrant hub for general aviation, private flying, and particularly gliding. For many years, it was home to the Upward Bound Trust, a charity dedicated to providing gliding experience and training to young people. It was known locally and in the aviation community as Haddenham Airfield or Thame Airfield.

Reopening Prospects

None. The prospect of reopening is zero. The site has been entirely repurposed for residential housing, making any future aviation use impossible. The land is now occupied by hundreds of homes, parks, and associated infrastructure.
