Military flying operations ceased in 1976. The station was fully closed and disposed of by the Ministry of Defence in 1994.
Military restructuring and post-Cold War defence budget cuts. The station's primary role became redundant after its main unit, the RAF Central Flying School, relocated to RAF Cranwell.
The site has been extensively redeveloped. The former married quarters and domestic site are now a large private housing estate known as the village of Upper Rissington. The technical site, including hangars, has been converted into the Rissington Business Park. A portion of the airfield and runways remains and is actively used by the Cotswold Gliding Club. The Rissington Kart Club also operates on part of the old runway circuit.
RAF Little Rissington was a major Royal Air Force station with significant historical importance. It opened in 1938 as a training base. From 1946 until 1976, it was the home of the Central Flying School, responsible for training all RAF flying instructors. Its most famous role was as the first home of the official RAF aerobatic team, the Red Arrows, which were based here from their formation in 1965 until 1976. The station was also home to their predecessors, the Red Pelicans.
There are no plans or prospects for reopening the site as a full-scale military or civilian airport for powered aircraft. The extensive residential and commercial redevelopment makes a full reopening unfeasible. It remains active only as a gliding site.
