Flying operations ceased in July 1945, with the station officially closing in 1961.
The primary reason for the cessation of flying operations was the end of World War II, which eliminated the need for large-scale pilot training. The airfield was then repurposed for storage. The final closure in 1961 was part of the post-war rationalization and reduction of the UK's military estate.
The site has been largely decommissioned and redeveloped. Much of the land has been returned to agriculture, with the outlines of the main runways and perimeter track still visible from the air. A significant portion of the former technical site and hangar area has been converted into the Forton Industrial Estate (also known as Montford Bridge Business Park). Several original airfield buildings, including T2 type hangars, are still standing and are used by various commercial and industrial businesses, such as building material suppliers (Forticrete) and agricultural machinery dealers. The former control tower was demolished in the 1980s.
RAF Montford Bridge was a significant World War II training airfield. Opened in 1942, it primarily served as the home for No. 9 (Pilots) Advanced Flying Unit ((P)AFU), part of No. 23 Group, RAF Flying Training Command. The unit's main role was to provide advanced, multi-engine flight training to pilots who had completed their initial training, preparing them for operational bomber or transport squadrons. Pilots, including many from Allied nations like Poland and Czechoslovakia, were trained here, primarily on the Airspeed Oxford aircraft. After the last training course finished and No. 9 (P)AFU was disbanded in July 1945, the airfield was transferred to RAF Maintenance Command. It was used by No. 20 Maintenance Unit (MU) as a sub-site for the storage of equipment, notably vast quantities of air-portable tents, until its final closure in 1961.
There are no known plans or prospects for reopening RAF Montford Bridge as an airport. The site's current use for agriculture and as an established industrial estate, combined with the presence of other active airfields in the region (like Sleap Airfield), makes its reactivation as an aviation facility highly improbable.
