Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Approximately 2013-2014. While an exact date is not officially recorded, analysis of historical satellite imagery shows the grass runway was still intact in 2012 but had been partially built over by new lakes and lodges by mid-2014, with the redevelopment fully covering the site by 2015.

Reason for Closure

Land redevelopment for commercial leisure use. The airstrip was located on the grounds of the Eye Kettleby Lakes complex, which underwent a major expansion. The land occupied by the runway and hangar was repurposed for the construction of additional fishing lakes and luxury holiday lodges, making aviation operations impossible.

Current Status

The site has been fully redeveloped and is now an integral part of the award-winning Eye Kettleby Lakes Holiday Park. The area that once formed the runway is now occupied by several fishing lakes and numerous holiday lodges. There are no remaining visible traces of the former airstrip or its aviation facilities.

Historical Significance

Eye Kettleby Airstrip was a private general aviation airfield. Its primary function was to serve recreational pilots and light aircraft based in the Melton Mowbray area. It consisted of a single grass runway, oriented roughly 06/24, with a length of approximately 700 meters (2,300 feet), and at least one private hangar. It was a typical small, local airstrip, significant to the local flying community but without any major military or commercial history.

Reopening Prospects

Zero. There are no plans or prospects for reopening the airstrip. The land has been permanently and completely transformed for a successful and established commercial tourism and leisure business, making any future return to aviation use infeasible.
