Circa 2018-2020. The exact date is unknown as it was a private airstrip that gradually fell into disuse. While listed in flight guides as active in 2017, satellite imagery from subsequent years shows a decline in maintenance and activity.
Cessation of private flying activities. As a private farm strip, its operation was solely dependent on the owner/operator. The closure appears to be a result of the owner stopping flying operations for personal reasons, rather than external factors like regulatory action, accidents, or commercial economic failure.
The site has reverted to agricultural use as part of the larger Springfield Farm. The outline of the former grass runway is still visible in satellite imagery but it is no longer maintained for aviation and shows tracks from farm vehicles. A large modern building on the western end of the strip, which likely served as a hangar, remains on site and is presumed to be used for general agricultural storage.
Springfield Farm Airstrip was a private General Aviation (GA) airfield. Its primary purpose was to support recreational flying and personal transport for the owner. It typically handled light, single-engine aircraft capable of operating from a short, grass runway (approximately 550 meters). The airstrip had no commercial, military, or scheduled flight operations. Its significance was purely local, serving as a private base for the aircraft owner and contributing to the UK's network of small airfields used by the GA community.
There are no known plans or public prospects for reopening the airstrip. Reinstating it would require the landowner's initiative and investment to bring the runway back to a safe, usable condition. It is highly likely to remain closed and integrated into the surrounding farmland.
