Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2009-2010. The airfield was noted as closed by the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust by 2010. Satellite imagery from that period shows the beginning of industrial expansion onto the former runway area.

Reason for Closure

Economic and industrial redevelopment. The land occupied by the private airstrip was repurposed for the expansion of the adjacent Arclid Silica Sand Quarry, a large-scale industrial operation. The value of the land for mineral extraction and industrial use superseded its value as a private airfield.

Current Status

The site of the former airfield has been completely absorbed by the Arclid Silica Sand Quarry, an active industrial site operated by the company Sibelco. The land is now used for sand extraction, processing, and storage. All traces of the runway, hangars, and other airfield infrastructure have been permanently removed and the landscape has been significantly altered by quarrying activities.

Historical Significance

Arclid Airfield was a private, unlicensed airstrip primarily used for corporate and general aviation. It was operated by the Arclid Transport Co. Ltd., a local haulage firm, likely for business travel. The airfield, which opened in the 1970s, featured a single grass runway (approximately 650m long, with a likely orientation of 05/23) and required prior permission (PPR) to use. It was never a major military or commercial airport; its significance was as a local corporate flight facility for light aircraft.

Reopening Prospects

None. There are no plans or prospects for reopening Arclid Airfield. The site has been permanently and irreversibly redeveloped for heavy industrial use as a sand quarry, making any future aviation activity at this specific location impossible.
