Circa 2015-2016. The airstrip was permanently closed to accommodate a major residential housing development. Satellite imagery shows construction work beginning on the site around this period, with the runway becoming unusable by 2017.
The primary reason for closure was economic, specifically the sale of the land for large-scale residential development. The site was located in a prime area for the urban expansion of Lichfield, and the Streethay urban extension project was approved to build several hundred new homes, making the land more valuable for housing than for aviation.
The site of the former airstrip has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped. It is now a large housing estate, part of the 'Roman Heights' and 'Cathedral View' developments by builders such as Miller Homes and Taylor Wimpey. The exact path of the former northeast-southwest runway is now covered by new houses, gardens, and residential roads like Vespasian Road and Hadrian's Walk. There are no remaining traces of the airfield.
Streethay Farm Airstrip was a private grass runway used for general aviation. It operated on a Prior Permission Required (PPR) basis, typical for private farm strips in the UK. Its primary function was to serve the local recreational flying community, providing a base and landing area for light, single-engine aircraft. While it held no major military or commercial significance, it was a well-regarded local facility for private pilots and a classic example of the many small airfields that have been lost to urban development across the country.
There are zero prospects for reopening the airstrip. The land has been permanently converted to high-density residential use, making any future aviation activity at this location impossible.
