Airport Closure Information

Last updated: Jul 25, 2025
Closure Date

Circa 2012-2014. The airfield was a private strip and its closure was not officially documented with a single date. Analysis of satellite imagery shows the grass runway was visible and maintained until around 2012, after which it became progressively overgrown and was fully returned to agricultural use by 2015.

Reason for Closure

Cessation of private use and change of land use. Stow Longa was a private farm strip, and its closure was likely due to the owner ceasing aviation activities. The land was subsequently converted back to full agricultural use. The construction of the large Stow Longa Solar Farm on adjacent land around 2015 further cemented the change in the area's land use, making aviation impractical.

Current Status

The site of the former runway has been completely reclaimed for agriculture and is now an active farm field, indistinguishable from the surrounding landscape. A large solar farm is located on the land immediately to the south-east of the former airstrip's location. The small hangar-like building associated with the airstrip appears to still be on-site, likely repurposed for farm storage.

Historical Significance

Stow Longa Airfield was a small, private grass airstrip with limited historical significance. It was not a military or commercial airport. Its primary function was to support local General Aviation (GA), serving as a base for the landowner's private light aircraft for recreational purposes. The ICAO designator 'GB-0211' is an unofficial UK-specific code used in some navigation databases and flight simulators to identify small airfields, rather than an official ICAO code.

Reopening Prospects

Effectively zero. There are no known plans or prospects for reopening the airfield. The land has been fully integrated back into agricultural production, and the proximity of the large solar farm makes any future aviation use highly unlikely and impractical.
