Replacement and Modernization. The ground-level helipad (DE-0019) was decommissioned and replaced by a new, state-of-the-art rooftop helipad (ICAO: EDBF) built on top of the hospital's new building extension. This upgrade was undertaken to improve patient care by allowing for a much faster and more direct transfer of critically injured patients from the helicopter into the hospital's shock rooms and operating theaters via a dedicated elevator. The new rooftop facility is also larger, capable of handling heavier helicopters, and equipped for instrument flight rules (IFR), allowing for operations in poorer weather conditions.
The site of the former ground helipad has been completely redeveloped and integrated into the expanded hospital campus. Satellite imagery shows the area is now occupied by a combination of a parking lot, access roads, and landscaped green space. The physical infrastructure of the helipad, including markings and lighting, has been removed.
The Frankfurt am Main Accident Hospital Ground Helipad (DE-0019) was a critical piece of infrastructure for the regional emergency medical system. For many years, it served as the primary landing site for Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) at the Berufsgenossenschaftliche Unfallklinik (BG Unfallklinik), a major trauma center specializing in accident and orthopedic injuries. Air rescue helicopters, such as the well-known 'Christoph 2', used this helipad to deliver critically injured patients from across the Rhine-Main region. Its operation was vital for providing rapid, life-saving access to specialized medical care, significantly reducing the time between injury and treatment.
None. The helipad has been permanently superseded by the superior rooftop helipad (EDBF). The new facility offers significant operational and medical advantages that make a return to the old ground-level site obsolete and impractical. There are no plans or reasons to consider reopening DE-0019.
