Sun Country Airlines, an ultra-low-cost carrier, was founded on July 2, 1982, by former Braniff International Airways pilots and flight attendants, with its first revenue flight taking place on January 20, 1983. The airline is headquartered at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport (MSP), which also serves as its primary operating base. Sun Country also has an operating base in Cincinnati. The airline became publicly traded on March 17, 2021, listing on NASDAQ under the ticker symbol SNCY. However, on May 13, 2026, Allegiant Travel Company acquired Sun Country, with plans to eventually integrate all operations into the Allegiant Air brand while maintaining a significant presence at MSP.
As of December 2025, Sun Country Airlines operates an all-Boeing 737 fleet, consisting of 44 passenger aircraft (primarily Boeing 737-800s, with some 737-900ERs entering service) and 20 Boeing 737-800BCF cargo aircraft operated for Amazon Air. The airline flies to approximately 172 destinations across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. Sun Country does not belong to any major airline alliance.
Sun Country offers a "hybrid low-cost" model, focusing on leisure and visiting friends and relatives (VFR) travelers. While it previously offered two classes of service, it transitioned to an all-economy configuration after being acquired by Apollo Global Management. Currently, it offers three variations of economy seats: Best, Exit Row, and Standard. The airline also operates significant charter services for entities like the United States Armed Forces, NCAA football teams, Major League Soccer, and casinos. A substantial portion of its revenue also comes from its cargo operations for Amazon Air, which provides a consistent revenue stream and helps mitigate the seasonality of its passenger services.
