Northern Colorado Regional Airport (IATA: FNL, ICAO: KFNL) serves Loveland, US.
The Northern Colorado Regional Airport (KFNL/FNL), located in Loveland, US, is a public-use, commercially certified airport. Jointly owned and operated by the Cities of Fort Collins and Loveland, it serves as a regional air transportation hub, accommodating general aviation, seasonal commercial flights, private charters, business and corporate aviation, emergency medical transport, aerial fire suppression, flight training, and private transportation. It is one of only fourteen commercially certified airports in Colorado.
Established in 1963 and commencing operations in 1964, the airport was officially renamed Northern Colorado Regional Airport in 2015/2016, previously known as the Fort Collins–Loveland Municipal Airport. The facility spans 1,050 acres and features an 8,500-foot main runway (15/33) with a full parallel taxiway and instrument landing system, along with a shorter crosswind runway (6/24). A notable innovation includes its selection in 2015 as the first test facility in the U.S. for a remote air traffic control tower, which integrates real-time visual feeds with radar data. The airport significantly contributes to the regional economy, generating approximately $161 million annually and supporting over 1,000 jobs. By the end of 2019, it achieved financial self-sustainability for its operational budget. In late 2024, a new passenger terminal was completed to support future growth in airline routes, with plans targeting 2027.
Currently, KFNL hosts approximately 265 based aircraft and handles an estimated 95,000 flight operations annually. It is home to various aviation businesses, including fixed-base operators, five flight training schools, two aircraft maintenance and repair stations, and an avionics center. The airport offers limited scheduled commercial service through a hybrid ground-air shuttle operated by Landline, connecting to Denver International Airport (DIA). While past commercial service by Avelo Airlines ceased in June 2022, Allegiant Air has expressed plans to resume service in the near future. The airport operates 24 hours a day and has a long-term vision that includes further upgrades to the commercial passenger terminal and development of additional hangars. It is recognized as Colorado's busiest airport without a traditional air traffic control tower.
