LAN Cargo (ICAO: LCO), now primarily known as LATAM Cargo Chile, is a key player in the global air freight industry, operating as a subsidiary of the LATAM Airlines Group.
LAN Cargo was founded on May 22, 1970, when the cargo and passenger operations of LAN-Chile were separated. In 2016, as part of the broader merger of LAN Airlines and TAM Linhas Aéreas to form LATAM Airlines Group, LAN Cargo was rebranded to LATAM Cargo Chile. This new brand unified the cargo operations of LAN Cargo, TAM Cargo, LAN Cargo Colombia, and Mas Air, creating the largest cargo airline group in Latin America.
The airline's main operational hubs are at Miami International Airport (MIA) in the USA and Arturo Merino Benítez International Airport (SCL) in Santiago, Chile. LATAM Cargo Chile manages a dedicated fleet of approximately 20 freighter aircraft, predominantly consisting of Boeing 767-300F and Boeing 767-300BCF models, supplemented by Boeing 777 freighters. The cargo group also leverages the belly hold capacity of LATAM Airlines Group's passenger fleet, which includes Boeing 767, 777, 787, and various Airbus A320 and A350 aircraft.
LATAM Cargo offers air services to around 140 to 155 destinations across 25 to 29 countries. Its extensive route network covers South America, North America, Europe, the Caribbean, Oceania, Asia, and Africa, with a strong presence in the domestic markets of Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. While the parent LATAM Airlines Group was a Oneworld alliance member until 2020, LAN Cargo operates exclusively as a cargo carrier, and the concept of passenger alliances does not directly apply to its freight services. The airline offers specialized cargo services including Express, Standard, and Flex options, designed to meet varying shipment urgency and flexibility requirements, covering a wide array of goods from critical pharmaceuticals to perishables like salmon and flowers, hazardous materials, and general freight. They also provide temperature-controlled solutions, specifically Pharma Passive and Active Pharma, for sensitive medicines and vaccines.
