Common Complaints

• Unmanned Airfield and Pilot Responsibility: As a private, unregistered, and unmanned airfield, pilots are solely responsible for assessing safety and their actions. There are no traditional terminal facilities, security, or customs/immigration services.
• Wildlife on Runway: A significant and frequent concern is the presence of wild animals (such as buffalo, giraffe, and buck) roaming on the unfenced runway, requiring pilots to perform low-level inspection passes and contact reception for runway clearance.
• Challenging Runway Characteristics: The runway has a slope and high elevation (4300ft AMSL), which, especially combined with high temperatures, can create challenging density altitude conditions for takeoffs and landings.
• No AVGAS: AVGAS is not available for purchase.
• Prior Approval and Fees: Pilots must complete an online landing form before arrival to ensure a smooth touchdown, and Zebula reserves the right to refuse landing if the form is not submitted. There are landing fees (R100) and gate entrance fees (R150) (as of March 2023).
• No Inter-Estate Access: It is no longer possible to land at Zebula and easily visit the neighboring Mabula estate, as the two estates do not permit guests of one to visit the other.

While the operational aspects require careful planning due to the unmanned nature and potential for wildlife on the runway, the positive experience of connecting directly to the resort's offerings makes it a desirable destination for many.
