Waterkloof Air Force Base (WKF)

Waterkloof Air Force Base (FAWK (WKF)) is the busiest and primary operational airbase of the South African Air Force (SAAF), located on the outskirts of Pretoria, South Africa, near Centurion.

Type of Facility and Operations: As a military airbase, Waterkloof Air Force Base serves critical national defense functions and supports diverse missions, including military transport, VIP flights, training, and humanitarian operations. It houses various SAAF units, such as VIP transport (21 Squadron), medium transport (28 Squadron), light transport (41 and 44 Squadrons), security (504 Squadron), and maintenance support (5 Air Servicing Unit). The base also accommodates commercial air traffic on an emergency basis and acts as the primary landing facility for high-ranking international delegates. It is equipped to support logistical and cargo operations, enhancing air mobility in Southern Africa.

Notable Features and History: Opened officially on August 1, 1938, as Waterkloof Air Station, it initially served as a secondary forced-landing field to the nearby AFB Swartkop. The base was upgraded during World War II and underwent significant renovations in the 1950s, including the construction of tarmac runways to accommodate jet aircraft. From 2008 to 2011, major infrastructure upgrades were completed to meet international standards, allowing it to handle large-bodied military and commercial aircraft such as the Boeing 747-400 and Airbus A400M. Waterkloof Air Force Base features two asphalt runways: 01/19, measuring 3,353 meters (11,001 ft), and 06/24, measuring 1,920 meters (6,299 ft). The base's motto is "Acquirit Qui Tuetur" (He Obtains Who Defends). Notable historical events include the "Guptagate" controversy in 2013, where a private flight landed unlawfully at the base, and the landing of a US-sanctioned Russian transport plane in May 2023, which reportedly strained South Africa-United States relations.

Current Status: Waterkloof Air Force Base remains South Africa's largest operational support base and a crucial hub for national defense and aviation. It continues to manage the Ditholo Training Area and maintains its upgraded infrastructure to support a wide range of military and, when necessary, humanitarian and emergency commercial aviation operations.
