Yongphulla Airport (YON)

Yongphulla Airport (VQTY/YON) is a domestic airfield serving the Trashigang District, providing a vital air link to the remote eastern region of Bhutan. Situated at an elevation of approximately 8,442 feet (2,573 meters), it plays a crucial role in reducing travel time between eastern Bhutan and the capital, Thimphu, which would otherwise require a multi-day journey by road. The airport is one of only four in the country and is known for its challenging, visually-guided approach through mountainous terrain.

Originally constructed as an airstrip by the Indian Army in the 1960s, Yongphulla Airport underwent significant development to accommodate civilian flights. It was officially inaugurated for domestic air services in late 2011. However, operations were suspended in 2013 to allow for extensive runway upgrades and safety improvements required to handle the national airline's ATR 42 aircraft. After the completion of these renovations, which included resurfacing the runway and improving drainage, the airport reopened for scheduled flights in 2017.

The airport is located in the town of Yongphulla, approximately a one-hour drive from Trashigang, the district's main administrative center. The journey to and from the airport is via a winding mountain road, offering scenic views of the surrounding landscape. Travelers typically reach the airport by pre-arranged private vehicles or taxis, as public transport options are limited.

Operations at Yongphulla are exclusively domestic. Drukair, the Royal Bhutan Airlines, is the primary operator, offering scheduled flights connecting Yongphulla with Paro International Airport (PBH) and occasionally with Gelephu Airport (GLU). All flights are highly dependent on weather conditions, and cancellations or delays are common, especially during monsoon season or periods of low visibility. The airport does not handle a large volume of passengers and operates with a limited flight schedule.

Facilities at Yongphulla Airport are basic, reflecting its small scale and domestic focus. The terminal consists of a single, simple building that houses check-in counters, a security screening area, and a modest waiting lounge for departing passengers. There are no retail shops, restaurants, or dedicated airline lounges available on site. Restroom facilities are provided for travelers.

For those traveling through Yongphulla, it is advisable to confirm flight status on the day of travel due to the high potential for weather-related disruptions. Arriving at least one hour before departure is recommended. Given the limited availability of on-demand transport, arranging a car or taxi for pickup in advance is essential. The scenic but challenging flight is an experience in itself, offering a unique aerial perspective of Bhutan's eastern Himalayas.
