Sometime between 1995 and 2002. The airport was depicted on the 1995 aeronautical chart but had vanished from the 2002 chart, indicating closure within that 7-year window.
The primary reason for closure was economic, driven by urban encroachment and the increasing value of the land for real estate. As the Horizon City suburban development expanded around the airport, the land became more profitable for residential housing than for general aviation operations. The airport was eventually sold and redeveloped.
The airport site has been completely redeveloped into a residential neighborhood. The runway, taxiways, and all airport structures have been demolished. The land is now covered by single-family homes and suburban streets. For example, Ryderwood Avenue and Darwood Street run directly through the area where the runway once existed. There are no visible remnants of the former airport.
Horizon Airport was a privately-owned, public-use general aviation airport established between 1966 and 1970. Its main purpose was to serve as a key amenity for the massive Horizon City master-planned community. The developers included the airport to attract residents, particularly pilots and business owners with private aircraft. It featured a single, paved 5,000-foot runway (1/19) and basic facilities. The airport primarily handled private aircraft operations, such as personal travel, flight training, and recreational flying, supporting the growth of the then-remote suburban area.
There are zero prospects for reopening Horizon Airport. The land has been irreversibly converted to residential use, making any future aviation activity at this location physically impossible. No plans exist, nor could they be feasibly made, to revive the airport.
