The airport was permanently closed between 1997 and 1998. The 1995 Sectional Chart depicted it as an active private airfield, but by 1998, the FAA Airport/Facility Directory listed it as 'Closed'. Satellite imagery confirms that construction of the shopping center that replaced it was underway by 1999, indicating the airport ceased operations in the preceding year or two.
The primary reason for the closure was economic and real estate development. The airport's owner, Lynford Pierson, sold the valuable land to developers. The property's prime location near major thoroughfares like Interstate 80 and Route 447 made it far more profitable for commercial use than for general aviation. This is a classic example of urban encroachment, where the rising value of land for development leads to the closure of a small, privately-owned airport.
The airport site has been completely and irreversibly redeveloped. It is now the location of the Eagle Valley Shopping Center. There are no remaining traces of the runway, hangars, or any other airport infrastructure. The land is occupied by large retail stores (such as a Price Chopper supermarket and TJ Maxx), smaller shops, restaurants, and a large parking lot. The main axis of the shopping center roughly aligns with the orientation of the former runway.
Established in 1966 by local aviator Lynford 'Lindy' Pierson, the Stroudsburg-Pocono Airport (formerly FAA identifier: N53) was a key general aviation hub for the Poconos region for over 30 years. It primarily served private pilots, flight training operations (such as the Pocono Pilot's Academy), and tourism, providing a convenient access point for visitors to the area. The airport featured a single paved runway (8/26) approximately 2,600 feet long, along with hangars, tie-downs, and a small Fixed-Base Operator (FBO) offering fuel and other services. It was a cherished local landmark for the aviation community and a symbol of the Poconos' accessibility.
There are zero prospects for reopening the Stroudsburg-Pocono Airport. The land has been permanently repurposed for high-density commercial use. The cost and logistical challenges of acquiring the land, demolishing the existing shopping center, and reconstructing an airport make any such proposal infeasible. The aviation needs of the region are now served by other airports, primarily the Pocono Mountains Regional Airport (KMPO).
I just added the IATA code ESP to this airport, and I'm not 100% sure. IATA code lookup shows ESP assigned to "Birchwood-Pocono" in East Stroudsburg, which has been closed since 1996: (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Birchwood-Pocono_Airpark) However, a few non-authoritative sources have ESP assigned to this airport (do a Google search for "N53 ESP"). Can anybody please confirm this change?
