Portland Heliport

The primary reason for closure was the redevelopment of the industrial land on which it was located. The property, formerly owned by the business Gildersleeve, Inc., was acquired by the Town of Portland as part of a major riverfront revitalization project. The heliport was decommissioned to facilitate the environmental cleanup of the former industrial site and its conversion into a public space.

The site of the former heliport has been completely transformed and is now an integral part of the Portland Riverfront Park. The specific paved area that once served as the helipad is now a public space within the park, offering scenic views of the Connecticut River and the Arrigoni Bridge. The land is used for recreation, community events, and parking.

The facility was a private-use heliport officially designated as Gildersleeve Helistop (2CT1). It was owned and operated by Gildersleeve, Inc., a company with roots in Portland's prominent brownstone quarrying and construction industries. The heliport's operations were limited to serving the private business needs of its owner, likely for executive transport, aerial surveys of work sites, and other corporate aviation activities. It held no significance as a public transportation hub and did not offer commercial or scheduled services.

There are zero plans or prospects for reopening the heliport. The land has been permanently repurposed for public recreational use, and its status as a town park makes the re-establishment of an aviation facility at this location infeasible and contrary to the town's development plans.
