Sheepshead Airport

No specific reason for the closure is officially documented. However, for a small, privately-owned airfield like Sheepshead, closure is typically due to economic factors, the sale of the property, the owner's retirement or death, or rising liability and insurance costs. There is no evidence to suggest it was closed due to a major accident or for military conversion.

The site is now private property and is no longer used for any aviation activities. Satellite imagery shows the clear outline of the former turf runway, but it is completely overgrown with grass and vegetation. The land appears to be used for private residential or agricultural purposes, and the runway is not maintained.

Sheepshead Airport was a small, private general aviation airfield. It was not depicted on maps in 1955 but appeared on the 1969 Washington Sectional Chart. It served local private pilots and the general aviation community. The airport featured a single unpaved turf runway, approximately 2,200 feet in length, oriented NW/SE. A 1982 airport directory listed the owner as Paul E. Miller. The airport never handled commercial or military operations and its significance was limited to recreational flying and private transport for the local area.

There are no known plans or prospects for reopening Sheepshead Airport. Given that it has been closed for over two decades and the land is privately owned and unmaintained, a reopening is considered extremely unlikely.
